All I want to say about Bhubanbari is that it takes me back to a time we left behind a long, long, long ago. Maybe I go there to seek comfort and warmth, which is lost from the ultra-modernized world, full of high-tech features in homes. I don't know whether I should call those "home" or not--maybe just mere buildings. Whereas Bhubanbari has an essence that I lost in my childhood. My maternal grandma's house is gone; there stands a five-storied building now. And my paternal grandparents' house, where I actually grew up, is now in different hands. So, as the harshness of adulthood hits, I seek comfort and warmth in Bhubanbari's old Calcutta charm--the warmth of an era when the world felt simpler, more peaceful, and perhaps, just a little better.
This is a bullshit place in the name of heritage experience. From dirty linens to filthy rooms, the guy is running a scam. He will not allow you to even check the property before chekin in demanding the full amount. Don't go by the google reviews, must be paid. The atmosphere is even eerie at night. Women travellers even with their male counterparts will not feel comfortable. Attaching images. Even the queen room with an attached washroom does not have a basin.
Great homestay! Very unique. Super home cooked food and laundry service available. Located close to Hatibagan Market, Girish Park Metro, Ramakrishna Mission, Jorosanko Thakurbari, College Street book market, Indian Coffee House and many more local restaurants and attractions. Great place to experience the essence of North Kolkata heritage
I'm from Bombay and have travelled twice to Kolkata this year and stayed at Bhubanbari both times. For me this is going to be my home whenever I'm in Kolkata. There's so much life in this place and surrounded by stories. It has a great energy, beautiful interiors and a lot of space for you to feel like you're living in a lil palace. This ancestral home is taken care by Gourab who was super accommodating and active in helping me figure my time around Kolkata. He helped me out with great places to go to and lovely food recommendations. Bhubanbari having situated in the North of Kolkata gives you a old feeling of the city. There's everything around that you need and the care takers of the house are also welcoming and available, whenever you need any help. Stay there once and you'd definitely be back!
This review is more of an admission of shame, that I, an out an out 'Kolkatan' having been born and grown up in this city, had allowed myself to be scammed by this 'heritage' property. ||We were two families who, having left the city in pursuit of our careers, had decided to come back to Kolkata and usher into the new year of 2024 at an old, heritage property. Through its carefully crafted marketing material, Bhubanbari sold us this dream. And it took about 30 minutes into our checking-in to convert it into a nightmare.||Ill-kept rooms, layer of dust on all furniture and curtains, stained washbasins, smelly toilets, discarded plastics from previous guests in dustbins - Bhubanbari scored a zero on all matters of hygiene and comfort.||The caretaker is unfit to climb stairs and would often send his son, a young school-going kid, to run errands. While he is a sprightly and engaging boy, one can not be oblivious to the fact that to use his services amount to actively abetting child labour.||The unit has a communal kitchen with a mishmash of utensils, electric kettles (including a dysfunctional one), and a dining area, which is often not cleaned after meals. You need to chase and chase some more to get anything done in this place.||Overall, it was a thoroughly disappointing and forgettable stay.
Bhubanari feels like it's alive, it has a life of its own, the presence of some mystic l felt it is. It's like an wise old sage. Every corner has humbleness, it's feels like the place opens its arms and gives you a warm hug of love and shows you it's blissful presence. l would not be satisfied no matter how much l compliment it, it's an aesthetic antique home which will always call me back!!!
This was my second visit to Bhubanbari, and I absolutely loved it! I had a couple of friends visiting from out of town, and it being their first time in Calcutta, I wanted them to have a 'real' experience of living in a typical Calcutta home. Of course, no other place to select other than Bhubanbari! Gaurav da is most patient with explaining routes, answering calls, dealing with queries, everything, really! He also does not constantly pressurize you with a "make payment right now or we cannot hold a room for you"! It almost feels like you're dealing with family! Bhubanbari is very easily accessible, by any means of transport found in Calcutta. And once you're there, it's just an absolutely pleasurable experience to "stay" in. Free access to the kitchen, the terrace/lounge, and the corridors of the beautifully redecorated heritage home, all count for a celestial experience! I'd keep coming back here always, and recommend every traveler to do so as well!
