the first boutique hotels in this university city of churches, colleges and punts. What best recommends the Varsity is its dead-centre location -- you can be at Jesus Green, the Cam and Scudamore's Punting within minutes. The other big selling point is the vibey rooftop cocktail bar, a rarity in Cambridge, with a menu that's longer than an English Lit reading list and views to make tourists drool. Come for Bonfire Night, before it closes for spring, to watch fireworks explode across the city. The hotel is compact but it packs a lot of fun into the space -- maybe a little too much, as weekends can feel like a hen party. It's not perfect -- there might be a missing remote control battery here, a glitchy bedside tablet or a bit of dust there -- which keeps it from top marks, but it's good value. A solid B-minus.
