CHHOTI KOTHI - A Heritage Homestay by the Ganges

Rooms look good on photo. Only the ground floor rooms are OK, but service is beyond believe. Room has saucers but no cup to make tea. Need to ask. No toothbrush provided, not a big issue, but for the price of a good hotel rate? Weather cold and cement floor is cold to go barefoot. Saw staff wearing the disposable slipper mean for guest. We ask for one. Very quickly was given like a special gift. When asked why not place in the room. They just smile. Room also not clean daily. Staff claimed we keep the key so cannot go in. Only the third day then was clean after leaving the key behind. Power trip every night. One night was 6 times. Half the room including all sockets has no supply. The water heater too. Was given 2 more bottles of water only on my last night like christmas gift, which supposed to be given daily. Excuse, no key. Can't they place at the door? On closer look the place is not well maintained, dusty and cobweb. We booked 2 rooms, prepaid for 5 nights. Given 1 on ground floor and 1 on roof top. When asked can have both rooms on ground floor. Claimed all fully booked but there are not many people moving in and out for the 5 days we stayed. Part of the hotel under renovation and installing a lift. Claim the lift will work in 2 days, to few days, to not working when checking out. The lift top still covered with plastic sheet. It was a lies and they just smile. If you stay 1 or 2 days on the ground floor you may not experience the bad service. Suppose to be a heritage house with nice architecture, but was spoilt by bad service and not well maintained beyond the second floor. Owner stayed in second floor and claim the place is a home stay so if we need anything just asked. Guesthouse service are better. We figure out its easy to dump one of us up on the top floor so that staff do not have to go up daily to serve different guest for 5 days. Besides, already paid by the hotel agent. They know we will never go back again even if service is good. So "why bother" is their attitude just keep replying the lift will work in a few days. Very insulting. Top floor room is not in good condition. Door leading to the top terrace is broken and link to the room. Owner tried to sell us the roof top has great view. Barely, obstruct by equally high roof top from neighbour. We pick the location because a temple we want to visit is nearby.

Good boutique hotel, just near the Prayagraj Sangam (near Dashashwamedh Ghat). Rooms are cosy and well-appointed. Service is a tad slow during peak tourist traffic but suits the relaxed atmosphere of the place. Worth exploring.

While on a pilgrimage of Prayag and Kashi, I happened to book my stay in the newly opened 'chhoti kothi' of Prayagraj. The ambience of the place, the spiritual vibes around the precincts and the subtle touch of old heritage and charm took my breath away. Situated in the Daraganj area, chhoti kothi has proximity to the Sangam, as well as some very important temples of 'siddh manyata' like the nag vasuki and dashashvmedh temple. The essence of Prayag can be felt in this part of the city. Chhoti kothi is an architectural wonder of the yesteryears and contains a old world charm. The rooms have an ethereal feel to it with the presence of lighted coves, wood rafters and old style doors and windows. An aangan open to skylight with a fountain in it's centre has a deep calming effect. A beautiful place to soothe your nerves and relax in the proximity of the Ganges
