This house is great and the location is brilliant. The two downsides are the cleanliness and staffing. Bathroom needs to be thoroughly cleaned with a wire brush and bleach and the bedrooms need cleaning. The old man who does security and breakfast was helpful but only speaks tamil so it was hard for us to communicate with him. It would be great if this place had the facilities for guests to cook their own meals or make their own cups of tea. |The bed was comfy and the neighbourhood is really quiet so you will get a good night's sleep.

Nice house with a lovely room when you come I but it is under staffed with one very nice man doing breakfast but he speaks no English - above all the rooms need to be cleaned, there was a thick layer of dust over the bed head and the bathroom was grimey with a strong smell of something chemical which didn't help. And the curtains didn't fit and the bathroom door didn't close properly. There are not many budget options in this very interesting are so I hope they hire some good cleaning staff and give the place a little TLC. My wifi inky worked in the communal areas. Very good location is the main plus point, quite central near the antique shops.

Recently rebranded as "Fine Guest House", I suspect the new name will not be as appealing to the western market. The original owner has control of the property with a (onsite) manager and elderly gent providing security and getting meals (from outside).||POSITIVES|Everyone is genuinely friendly and eager to do anything to make you happy. Truly lovely people. They arranged a very reasonably priced driver/car for sightseeing and transfer to railway station with breakfast takeaway. Whatever it lacks in polish was made up for. The security guy knows a few words of English and is really kind, as is everyone else||NEGATIVES |Firstly bear in mind that at c.Rs.2,500 per night this is half to a third the cost of a high-end heritage place. It's price reflects the facilities. A/C and hot water worked well and the floors are clean. Rooms are huge. However it lacks heritage ambience and refinement throughout. With investment this could change but then so would the room cost

This place is avoidable at best. Not maintained at all. We had a dusty room and a bathroom which has a door that did not bolt from inside. We were the only guests for the day and the whole house was unkempt. The next day, we requested the manager to have the room cleaned. When we got back the manager told us that it was done and new towels put in. But the room was not cleaned and still the old towels in place. The manager now suddenly says that the house keeping staff is ill! He even gives us room cleaning tools and floor cleaner and asks us to clean the room ourselves.||||He then charged a "cancellation fee" of Rs. 500 for leaving the place earlier than planned, though they did not have a cancellation policy and no other guests either. ||||Unprofessional people running the place, looking to make a quick buck.

i would be delighted to visit shanmuga vilas again !! it was a very peaceful stay with all amenities. the lobby and the rooms maintain the original chettinad architecture style but at same time giving the luxuries of today.

It is a 100 year old traditional chettinadu house renovated by the owner.The property is currently taken for a lease by an young Architect who just finished his studies.I spent my new year in this property.It is in the heart of the city.Sleep quality is good.Parking is on the road but safe.Sleep quality is good.

The best part about the hell is the old caretaker... gem of a person
