Riverside Inn Muttar - Backwater Home Stay

I had the pleasure of staying with Prof Joseph, Cathy, and Dillip at Riverside Inn for a few days in early December 2024. In all honesty, I came as a visitor on the recommendation of a dear local friend, and I left feeling like I'd found family. Very generous hospitality, comfortable lodgings, tranquil views over the river (mind the mozzies in the evening), and incredible food. My hosts were happy to share a little of their stories, and helped arrange a river boat tour (VERY highly recommended) and the services of their excellent local driver. Attending the local church service with my hosts was an unexpected and very colourful highlight of my stay, even if I only understood about three words!

The Riverside Inn at Muttar is the perfect getaway if you're visiting Kerala. Situated right beside a calmly flowing river, you wake up to the trilling of birds and a delicious breakfast. Prof. Joseph and Kathy Joseph helped us with arranging a houseboat trip in Allepey. They also arranged for a car and driver to pick us up from Kochi and take us back. The rooms are well appointed with attached bathrooms. A large airy dining area and the verandah also with an outdoor setting completes the picture. Dilip, their right-hand man took good care of us as the host couple were away. It was truly a home away from home. Highly recommend.

It's a home away from home...lovely place and lovely hosts. Cathy Aunty's recipes are just mouth watering. Uncle and Aunty are full of happiness and warmth. They made us feel like we are living at our own place..the beautiful experience that we had there at so low cost was totally surprising....we would go back there again and again..

Where do I start with this review, I have nothing but good, amazing and wonderful things to say about our stay. |So, our first visit to Kerala for a friends wedding, our friend had kindly organised this stay for us so we would be close by to attend the wedding. We arrived after a long flight from the UK and car journey to Riverside Inn - 3 hours from Kochi airport, but it was well worth it when Uncle Joseph and Aunt Kathy opened the door and came out with the most amazing smile. Taking us up to our room - which was like a suite really- Bedroom, dinning area, seating area and balcony. They showed us around and made us feel very welcome. We were always asked if we needed anything to help make our stay feel comfortable. |Later on that evening, we spent a little bit of time speaking with Aunt Kathy about how they opened up their home to guests like ourselves - so fascinating what they have done. |We were asked our breakfast preferences and what time which the next morning arrived on time and was absolutley amazing and finger licking good!!!! |After a full day of weddings and engagements for all of us, we asked Aunt Kathy and Uncle Joseph if they had some time and if we could spend some time with them and having a chat, they were so welcoming and were happy to talk us about a lot of things. Uncle Jospeh is a professor, he has a lot of knowledge and he was kind enough to share some of that with us. They have had an absolute amazing life and it was so nice just sitting there and getting to know them. They made us feel as though we were family. |Never done a homestay before, but if every homestay is like this then we will definately be doing more of them. |This property is pretty much a sustainable property if you care about the environment. It runs on solar power making use of the amazing weather. |We wernt there long enough and a bit gutted that our time was so short, we would have loved to stay longer, but we will definitely be going back and staying in touch with this amazing couple. I cannot recommend The Riverside Inn, Muttar highly enough. If you are visiting Kerala, you MUST visit this beautiful place.

Our family of six spent a perfect and beautiful 24hours at Riverside. We were greeted with a very warm welcome, which at 6am on New Years Day set the tone for the rest of our all too short stay. Cathy is an absolute delight and we all felt very well cared for while at Riverside. A stunning location and peaceful surroundings immediately relaxed us after a number of days travelling.|Thank you both, Cathy and Joseph for your hospitality and kindness during our stay at your stunning home. Stayed for 2 days,it was awesome experience. Uncle & Aunty took care of us though we were their children. Calm , relaxed place with scenic river. Uncle gave full background how he started hosting guest. they are doing this with lot of passion. very passionate in what they do and great to see that at this age. Some thing which needs to be learnt.||||Awesome home , love to stay once again.

What can I say other than the word above "paradise". We arrived at the Riverside after touring around Munnar for a few days. Even after the confusion of Booking.com failing to notify Kathy of our stay we were welcomed with open arms and made to feel part if the family instantly. The Riverside is as it sound right by the water. Indeed the water is so clean we were able to swim in it. Kathy and Jo's home us stunning. Unlike other Homestay you truly are part of the family. Jo showed us round his village where we were met with countless waves, greetings and smiles. Kathy provided us with some of the best food we have tasted since are arrival in this beautiful country. A change of plan resulted in us needing a hotel for a night in Allepey; Jo jumped into action and booked a place for us and arranged for us to be driven at no cost in his car to Allepey. I truly cannot put into words how Idylic this place is. Two perfect days in a perfect location with perfect hosts. THANKYOU.
