My stay at Jungle Bird Homestay in Thattekad was nothing short of magical! Nestled in the lush greenery of Kerala, this homestay is a haven for nature lovers, especially birdwatchers.||The highlight of my visit was the exceptional birdwatching experience guided by Sudhamma and Girish. Their deep knowledge, keen eyesight, and passion for birding made every outing unforgettable. Thanks to them, I spotted some rare and beautiful birds I had only dreamed of seeing. Whether you're an avid birder or just starting out, their expertise will leave you amazed.||Adding to the charm of Jungle Bord is Sandhya's incredible cooking. Every meal was a delight--authentic, flavorful, and made with love. From traditional Kerala dishes to comforting home-cooked meals, every bite was a treat!||Beyond birdwatching and great food, the homestay itself is peaceful and welcoming. The hosts make you feel at home from the moment you arrive. If you're looking for a place to relax, reconnect with nature, and experience genuine Kerala hospitality, Jungle Bird Homestay is the perfect choice!||I can't wait to return. Highly recommended!
We had a wonderful stay at the Jungle Bird homestay which is right inside the Thattekad bird sanctuary. Girish and Sudha Amma are really exceptional. Their knowledge and intrest in birds is amazing. And their enthusiasm is contagious. |Inspite we being their in the off season for birding that is the end of April, we did spot a good number of species like the mountain imperial pigeon, leggis hawk eagle, white eared kingfisher, white breasted blue flycatcher to name a few. It was raining every evening. Inspite of the rains we spotted Indian night jar, and some owls. |The homestay was very comfortable with birds and butterflies everywhere you look and Malabar giant squirrel dropping by to check in on you ever so often ! |The food was excellent. Sandhya is an amazing host ! Highly recommended!
We had the most amazing time staying at Jungle Bird Homestay. Sudhamma and Gireesh have astounding knowledge of the local bird and wildlife, and their joy in showing them to us was infectious. We're a family of nature lovers - this was our first time birding but won't be out last! Sandhya's home-cooked Keralan food is absolutely delicious, and everyone was so lovely and welcoming.||The rooms are clean and comfortable, with beautiful views from the terrace. Staying here was truly a magical experience.
Loved my stay here. Really enjoyed my introduction to birding. The hosts Susha, Girish and Sandhya are experienced and knowledgeable guides, very keen on conservation and respecting nature. The night walk was magical!||Sandhya's cooking is excellent and we really enjoyed breakfast lunch and dinner every day of our stay. ||Overall a fantastic experience, highly recommended if you enjoy birdwatching and peaceful environments. The whole experience is enhanced by the warm, friendly and welcoming hosts.
I had a wish to visit Thattekad since a long time. I reached morning and was greeted by a flame throated bulbul in the balcony of Jungle bird homestay. The next 3 days was full of avian surprises.|Gireesh is an excellent resource person. His knowledge of birds of thattekad, his endless stories of previous sightings of difficult to see birds, his tips how to locate the camouflaged birds are exciting. I was surprised how he spotted the frogmouth and Bay owl. Sudhamma is an inspiring figure. She used to accompany me on walks and I was inspired by her dedication and resilience. Sandhya is very calm and I enjoyed her tasty home cooked meals.|Finally when I was not walking in the forest, I was all the time in the balcony and terrace. You get lots of birds . It's a delight to see black baza soaring about the homestay , or the heart spotted woodpecker hopping or the great eared nightjar calling every morning and evening at the same time.
Our first experience of birding and it was a gem. Racket Tailed Drongos, various Bulbuls, Magpie Robins and a Giant Malabar Squirrel on the tree outside our bedroom window and Egrets Cormorants and the flash of a White Throated Kingfisher out across wetlands beyond, all within the first Hour!|The homestay is set on the edge of the forest inside the reserve. Our room was spacious, pleasant, clean and immersed in birdsong. Gireesh's enthusiasm was infectious and his ability to find rare Owls at night has to be seen to be believed. Sandhiya, his wife produced wonderful Keralan dishes and treated us as though we were family. |And then there is the legendary Sudhamma, Gireesh's mum. As a child in 1960's & 70's listening in on experts and researchers' lectures, was invited to join in. She is now a campaigner and national authority on Indian ornithology, conservation and woman's empowerment. Not that you'd know unless you read the framed citations. Our walks with her were almost without words but so rich in wonder, observation and immersion in the moment -by-moment life through which we walked. An absolute privilege.
Simple Homestay in the forest reserve. Hosted by Gireesh, his mother Sudha and his wife. Rooms are fairly basic but have everything you need and the family are on hand to make drinks whenever you want them. It's a full board option of tasty home-cooked food and plentiful. |There are options to go out three times a day with either Gireesh or his mother. The four hour early mornings were the best for me and I saw many more birds than at night. |I'm an amateur birdwatcher and not as experienced as the other guests but I still enjoyed it. |It's a very friendly environment and you feel like a member of the family.|It's not entirely clear that you have to pay for each birding trip and the price seemed "flexible" between different guests. I thought that the early mornings were better value than the night safari as the first evening we didn't see anything and still paid 1000 rupees.|A huge variety of birds to see and a good experience.
